Posting to WordPress using Tinydesk Writer is an easy and convenient way to create unique and fresh content and enables you to quickly response to your readers comments. anytime, anywhere.

Through a series of “Posting to WordPress” articles we will walk you through how to make the most of the many features of the TInydesk Writer iPhone application.

Logging-in

Before you can post to your wordpress.com or self-hosted WordPress blog you must first login. IF you have a WordPress.com blog all you need to do is enter your username and password. However, if you have a self-hosted or third-party blog then you will first need to enter your blog URL. Your blog URL can take various forms but is usually one of the following

http://blogname.hostname.com

http://www.hostname.com/blogname

Special notes:

What if Login fails?

If your login fails please check that you have XMLRPC enabled on your blog. This is done automatically for blogs on wordpress.com.

If you have a self-hosted or third-party hosted blog or site you will most likely need to manually enable xmlrpc in your blog dashboard under: Settings > Writing (click the checkbox next to “XMLRPC” in the Remote publishing section).

If you still have trouble logging in please check with your provider that they support remote publishing via XMLRPC.

Why is xmlrpc.php added to my blogs address?

When you enter the URL of your blog and return to the login screen you will notice that /xmlrpc.php/ has been appended to the end of your blogs URL. This additional notation is required in order to remotely publish to your blog and we add this out of convenience to make it easier for users to login.

If for some reason your host specifies that you login via a URL that is not appended by /XMLRPC.php/ then simply enter the full path that is provided by the host. In which case you will notice that xmlrpc.php does not get appended to the URL that you entered.

I have more than one blog. What URL do I use?

If you have more than one blog registered under the one username you can enter the URL of any blog in order to login and you will find that all of your blogs are displayed.

Adding other Blogs and Sites

Once logged in you should see all your blogs displayed on your Home screen in your Tinydesk Writer application.

However, if you have blogs or sites hosted with other service providers or have blogs or sites registered under different usernames you can easy add these blogs by touching the plus button on your home screen and follow the same procedure as explained above for logging into these sites.

Removing Blogs and Sites

To delete a blog or site you simply need to enter edit mode by touching on the Tinydesk name at the top centre of the Home screen. You will then see a red cross appear on your list of blogs and sites.

To remove a blog you simply need to touch the icons of the blogs you wish to remove which will be dimmed. Once a blog is removed all reference to it is deleted from the internal database.

Deleted blogs can be easy added back to your home screen by clicking on the plus button and repeating the login process.

Special note: Removing a blog simply removes reference to that blog from the iPhone application. it does NOT in any way delete the blog or any of its posts or pages from your host.

Where are my passwords stored?

On your iPhone ONLY!

When you login via the Tinydesk Writer App we use your credential to authenticate you against YOUR blog host and store your password details locally on your iPhone. Your details are NOT stored, otherwise used or copied by Tinydesk.

Can I safely login to my blog using someones else’s iPhone?

YES. You can safely login and access your blog or sites using someones else’s iPhone. When you have finished simply remove reference to your blog by following the procedure above.

In part-2 of this “posting to wordpress” series , coming soon, we will explain how to navigate a blog or site on the TInydesk Writer iPhone app.

Wordpress mobile themes and apps for publishing and managing blogs and sites via mobile devices such as iPhone and iPod Touch are important tools for the success of any contemporary blog or website.

Mobile Apps

Blogs have become nesceary business tools to engage with customers (oh, and to help drive traffic through improved search rankings!) The days when you could set and forget your website content have long evaporated. Visitors want to learn about your company, products and services and they expect to find new and interesting content when they return to your site. Blogging is now days mandatory.

To blog consistently and to proactively engage with customers and potential customers you will need to get yourself a mobile application that supports your WordPress blog. Without a good mobile blogging application posting to wordpress blogs and sites will be restricted to a desktop activity

Having a WordPress app will enable you to compose and edit posts anywhere, anytime and will make it more likely that you can find the time to compose new and interesting posts. It will also enable you to proactively engage with your audience by providing rapid feed back to comments, issues and questions.

Contemporary mobile blogging applications such as Tinydesk Writer enable you to compose and edit posts, moderate and reply to comments, incorporate pictures taken with your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and generally manage your all important blog.

Mobile Themes

Nielson reports that 62% of mobile users 25-34 own smartphones and the trend for smartphone penetration in all age groups is trending up. This means that your website must not only have interesting content, via a well crafted blog, but that that content must now be optimised for mobile users.

If you have a wordpress.com blog, visitors on mobile devices will automatically see mobile optimised content. However, owners and webmasters of self and third-party hosted WordPress.org blogs will need to specifically configure their site for mobile visitors.

There are some premium WordPress themes that will optimise your content equally for any device format. Alternatively, you may need to install a plugin, such as WordPress Mobile Pack, that will detect and switch between themes depending on the visitors device.

Other solutions such as the very popular WPTouch plugin, with more than 3 million downloads, combines a switcher and mobile WordPress theme all-in-one. Upon the detection of a mobile device the WPTouch Plugin serves mobile optimised content to your visitors. The fact that WPTouch is so popular does not make it a perfect solution by way of branding but by simply having a mobile optimised theme for mobile visitors will make your blog or site better than most.

Writing a blog using mobile blog applications is about to get much better with the expected release of WordPress 3.4 which offers some long awaited improvements of the WordPress XMLRPC API.

The new set of XMLRPC methods are primarily aimed at enabling mobile blog apps and other clients the ability to support custom posts and taxonomies that is now de rigour in themes and plugins and includes:

wp.getPosts

wp.getTaxonomies

wp.getTaxonomy

wp.getTerm

wp.deleteTerm

wp.editTerm

wp.getTerms

wp.getPostTypes

wp.getPostType

This new set of methods brings the WordPress API out from under the shadow of blogger, metaWeblog and MovableType APIs and moves the WordPress API into a class of its own. They will enable mobile apps to move beyond supporting lowest common denominator functionality of simple posts and start supporting the full power of WordPress which is its extensibility through themes and plugins.

The wp.getPosts method is a great addition to the API and supports filters. The big bugbear with metaWeblog.getRecentPosts was that it did not support an offset. This meant that if you wanted to see the 1000th post you had to get all 1000 posts. This issue is fixed in wp.getPosts which supports filters such as post_type, post_status, number (of posts to retrieve), and offset.

Another important addition to the API for mobile blog apps is the addition of feature image support for blog posts. This will be well received by the community in general but will be particular welcomed by the photo blogging community.

Media Library support was added in 3.01 with the addition of wp.getMediaLibrary and wp.getMediaItem but did not include the attachment Id which prevented the ability to edit or delete library items. The 3.4 API fixes this deficiency. Another nice fix is the addition of default image size, comment and ping status in wp.getOptions method.

The one problem that I see in the new API is that the response to wp.getPostType does not give any details on the custom fields associated with a post type. We must therefore ask how can we collect data through the mobile interface if we don’t know what data (custom fields) to collect? Frustratingly, if you do know what the custom fields are and collect the data it can be published using by wp.newPost and the new wp.getPosts returns all custom fields.

This means that we will be able to edit posts with custom fields but not, at least easily, create new posts with custom fields.

Take for example, a blog that has the Yoast, search engine optimisation plugin(SEO) installed which enables the definition of meta title and meta description (and optionally meta keywords.) When adding a new post, the back-end provides “meta boxes” for the collection of the title, description and keywords. However, the new set of XMLRPC methods will not provide the necessary information indicating the availability or requirement of these SEO custom fields. That is, support for the Yoast plugin would have to be hard coded into the mobile client.

If custom field (and meta box) information was provided in the wp.getPostType response it would be now easy for blog apps and other mobile and desktop clients to fully support any plugin or theme. That is, mobile devices would be able to support the full extensibility of the WordPress platform.

A big thanks needs to go Max Cutler, Joseph Scott and Andrew Nacin for the significant advancement of the WordPress XMLRPC API.

Photos galleries are one of the most popular plugins for the WordPress blogging and cms platform; much helped by the ubiquitous nature of digital cameras.

Within the plethora of WordPress Gallery plugins NextGEN Gallery is recognised, by fact of 5 million downloads, as the best of the gallery plugins.

However, until recently blogging apps have not supported the direct publishing of photos into WordPress Galleries. This has been unfortunate because mobile devices offer one of the best mechanisms for photo blogging. A theory supported by the recent takeover of Instagram by Facebook for a reported $1billion.

NextGEN Gallery on iPhone

Tinydesk Writer, released recently by Tinydesk, is the first and only blogging app to enable the direct publishing of photos from the iPhone camera or camera roll into NextGEN Galleries and albums.

Tinydesk writer enables new galleries and albums to be created and provides a Visual editor for imbedding galleries, albums and single images without the need to remember gallery short codes or manually establish albums and gallery IDs.

Photo galleries can also be browsed in the now familiar style used in social media apps such as Facebook and Instagram by flicking through the images.
